Every year new anti-aging products, procedures and devices hit the market. In an environment already saturated with options, it is difficult to know which are worth investing in. This is why Dr. Christine Stanko and her team start by attending conferences with internationally renowned speakers to learn about which products are valuable enough to add to the BMD repertoire.
Once the science is proven and backed by the experts, the next step is to investigate the product further by bringing it in-house. Our team personally test-drives every new eye cream, laser and dermal filler before we offer it to our patients. We compare short and long term results of the products to the ones that we already rely on, and adopt only those that are superior or bring something new and unique to our toolbox. Few new additions make the cut every year, but the investigation is exhaustive so we can ensure that our patients receive the best possible outcomes. Two of the most exciting additions we have seen over the years are CoolSculpting and the ever-expanding collection of dermal fillers.
Coolsculpting has become a household name in the last decade as the device that freezes fat, and as soon as it hit the market, doctor’s offices and medi spas couldn’t buy it fast enough! The first time the CoolSculping representative came to our office to sell us this brand new technology we tested the device, but ultimately decided that the outcomes weren’t significant or reliable enough to warrant offering the procedure to our patients. We tested devices that used heat instead of cold to reduce fat. We looked at chemical agents that claimed their results were the most impressive. After much consideration, we decided that none of these technologies were worthy of adding to our repertoire. Three years later, when the newly improved version of the device became available, we tested it again and were thrilled. With updates and improvements the CoolSculpting device had become the clear winner in the non-surgical, fat reduction department. We now have two CoolSculpting machines in our Villanova office so that we can offer “dual-sculpting” which allows us to permanently destroy fat twice as fast. Since 1981, when bovine collagen was the first agent to be approved by the FDA for cosmetic injection, scientists have been searching for the perfect dermal filler. Similarly, Dr. Stanko and her team are always on the lookout for new and innovative products that will enable them to plump lips, soften laugh lines and define cheeks in the most natural and long-lasting way possible. The most commonly used fillers today are hyaluronic acid-based and have subtle variations on a molecular level that make them uniquely appropriate for different areas of the face. In the last decade the selection of fillers has expanded 10-fold and can produce a variety of results. The specialists at Bryn Mawr Dermatology have carefully chosen which new fillers to add – like Restylane® Kysse with XpresHAn Technology™ for flexible movement and natural-looking volume, which tried-and-tested fillers to keep – like JUVÉDERM® VOLUMA™, and which new fillers to pass on. You can be assured that the products that our providers will select specifically for your needs are those that have outlasted the hype and will provide you with the results you deserve.
New techniques in cosmetic dermatology come along nearly as frequently as new devices and products. Our cosmetic team, consisting of Medical Doctors, Physician Assistants and Certified Aestheticians & Laser Techs, take every opportunity to both host and attend advanced training sessions in order to hone their skills. In addition to being regular attendees of large cosmetic symposiums like the AMI (Allergan Medical Institute) Masters Course and the Advanced Anatomy & Injection Technique Conference, our providers make it a point to participate in private trainings with professionals who are the developers of the cutting-edge techniques we are interested in adopting. These hands-on training opportunities enable our team to take the same products as our competitors and use them to achieve superior cosmetic results that you wouldn’t see when used by less-skilled professionals. Two of the most exciting techniques the Bryn Mawr Dermatology team has learned directly from the source are the Y LIFT® procedure and the EuroThread Lift.
Dr. Yan Trokel, a board-certified maxillofacial plastic surgeon invented a procedure that remedies the structural loss that happens to facial anatomy as a result of aging. As years pass, and you look in the mirror, you see a variety of changes that include a laxity of the skin and hollows where they didn’t used to be. These develop due to lifestyle choices, genetics, time, gravity and, in large part, a slow deterioration of muscle, bone and soft tissue that serve as the underlying lattice work to hold your skin taught. Bryn Mawr Dermatology had the pleasure of hosting Dr. Yan for an intensive, two-day course where we learned how to take his patented technique and dermal fillers we already know and love and combat the cause of jowling, chin depression, hollow cheeks and narrowing of the face. By mastering this skill Bryn Mawr Dermatology became one of only a handful of practices on the East Coast that is certified to provide the Y LIFT®, the procedure dubbed the “Miracle 30-Minute Facelift” by Dr. Oz.
EuroThread Lift’s Director of Product Development and Training Laurie Wall, visited Bryn Mawr Dermatology in 2018 to share with us her new technique of using absorbable surgical sutures to lift and tighten the neck, jaw and face. Her passion for her product and its capabilities was contagious. And once she demonstrated what a EuroThread Lift could do, we were instantly on board with adding it to our bag of tricks. This non-surgical, minimally-invasive procedure allows our experienced practitioners to instantly create face-lift-type results in an office setting without the use of anesthesia. The results are natural and last over a year. Being able to get hands-on with Laurie and have her impart her year of experience to our team was invaluable. Without her expertise the outcomes we see with every treatment would certainly not be as impressive. Threadlifting has become one of the most sought after anti-aging techniques available, and we could not be more pleased to have learned it from the master.
Dr. Christine Stanko, the owner and president of Bryn Mawr Dermatology, has spent her career becoming an aesthetic artist. She has taken every opportunity to improve on her natural abilities to sculpt patients into the most natural and beautiful version of themselves. Her extensive medical education and tireless efforts to stay at the forefront of her field is obvious in the results that she produces. Her dedication to her craft is apparent not only in her patient outcomes, but in the success and skill of the entire Bryn Mawr Dermatology cosmetic team. During the growth of her practice, her focus has been to develop a cohesive group of practitioners who not only understand, but anticipate how different individuals will respond to treatment. All members of the team are required to attend continuing medical education coursework and extensive aesthetic training every year to keep their skills sharp and cutting-edge. These hours of practice and training ensure that patient results are reliable, and in keeping with the highest standards.
