If you’re like many adults experiencing common signs of aging, you have likely developed have visible blue, purple or red veins on your legs, called spider veins (medically known as telangiectasias). These can be bothersome and make it difficult to wear clothing that shows any amount of leg. In most cases, these veins do not present a medical concern but are a significant cosmetic distraction.
If you’re seeking vein treatment for cosmetic reasons, Bryn Mawr Dermatology offers procedures to help you look your best and feel more confident. For a sclerotherapy consultation in Villanova or Collegeville, contact our dermatologists today at 610.525.7800!
Sclerotherapy is an effective, minimally invasive treatment for spider veins. These vessels can be found on any part of the body but are usually located where gravity has taken the hardest toll on our vascular system: feet, ankles and lower legs. They are never a medical concern, but cosmetically not ideal. After a quick injection, the veins shrink and are effectively closed off. It may go without saying, but patients who are qualified for sclerotherapy are those who are concerned about the appearance of visible veins in the lower body.
Sclerotherapy is a procedure used to diminish the appearance of spider veins in the legs. We inject a solution called Asclera® into the small, visible veins to destroy them. Sclerotherapy is good for small veins that are visible under the skin and that do not cause any pain or discomfort. If you have any pain or discomfort associated with your veins, or if you have varicose veins (veins that bulge from the skin), your provider may suggest that you see a vein specialist for treatment.
Providing sclerotherapy is as easy as injecting a solution into certain veins. During your consultation, our dermatologists will examine your legs and determine the extent of treatment required to diminish the appearance of spider veins. The day of your procedure, our provider will inject small amounts of the sclerosing agent into the visible veins. You will feel the tiny pinch and some burning. Some people experience mild cramping as well. Tiny rolls of cotton will be applied with tape to put pressure on the areas.
Veins that disappear usually do not come back, though new veins may appear. In some cases, we can even help soothe the appearance of veins with laser treatment after sclerotherapy; this provides a beautiful result without the need for additional injections.
We want you to feel your very best, and our staff is committed to helping you love your skin. If you are embarrassed by the appearance of spider veins, we can help you reclaim your sense of well-being and avoid second-guessing your appearance.
Patients will notice that there is some bruising and swelling that persists for several days after their procedure. However, injections are well-tolerated, and patients do not feel uncomfortable during or after their visit. There is no downtime after your treatment. Patients are instructed to wear compression garments for a few days (up to a week) after sclerotherapy. Initially, your results may be obscured by normal swelling and post-injection bruising, but this fades as tissue recovers.
Patients do not need to take any time off work and are generally comfortable returning to their everyday activities the day following their injections.
Side effects include bruising and hyperpigmentation of the treatment area. Hyperpigmentation may last weeks. Some people will experience mild cramping or soreness after the procedure as well. Rarely, ulceration, phlebitis (inflammation of the veins) or blood clots may result from treatment.
There’s no need to continue living with bothersome veins that make you feel self-conscious about your appearance. It’s difficult to feel that you aren’t free to wear comfortable clothing that reveals your legs, especially in warmer months. Regain your confidence with sclerotherapy in Villanova and Collegeville!
