To get the best bang for your buck, you want to make sure that you are using the most advanced and trusted clinical skin care on the market. All of the products available at Bryn Mawr Dermatology are formulated according to pharmaceutical standards of purity, potency, and stability. All active ingredients, and the concentrations and dosing protocols in which they are used, are supported by data published in peer-reviewed medical literature. We carry a healthy, but finite, selection of what we think are the most superior cleansers, moisturizers, anti-aging products, supplements, and sunscreens available.
At Bryn Mawr Dermatology, we have some heavy-hitting devices and techniques that will help reduce the look of dark circles under your eyes, obliterate sun spots, and smooth worry lines; however, once you reach your aesthetic goals, your at-home skincare routine will help you maintain the results.
We compare dermatologist-approved devices and techniques to going to the gym with a personal trainer who whips you into the best shape of your life with tricks and tools of the trade. You look great, you feel great, but the results won’t last unless you keep working at it after the sessions are over. A good skin care regimen can mean the difference between holding onto the smooth, uniformly-toned skin you see after an Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) treatment, and dark marks sprouting up again shortly after you’ve completed the laser series.
Different skin types require different types of attention, but what our dermatologist agree should be steps in every skin care regime are the following:
Cleanse. Find a cleanser that works well with your skin type whether it’s oily, dry or somewhere in between. The cleanser should remove excess oils, daily dirt and any products you may apply to your face, without stripping it of its protective layer. “Squeeky clean” is not the goal. If you want to exfoliate during the cleansing process we recommend additives like salicylic acid rather than physical exfoliants like walnut shell or scrubby beads. Physical exfoliants tend to cause micro-abrasions to the skin and invite bacteria to culminate while the right chemicals are gentle.
Treat. This step is optional, but allows you to add in a bevy of products that address your specific skin needs. If you have acne-prone skin you may want to consider using an exfoliating pad with an α-hydroxy acid to help unclog pores. If you have extra-dry skin you could add a hyaluronic acid serum to help seal in moisture. If you are fighting the good fight against aging skin you might consider a retinol to increase skin cell turnover or a Vitamin C serum to neutralize free-radicals.
Moisturize. Depending on your skin type and the weather you might need to adjust this step. During hot, humid summers, especially if you have oily or acne prone skin, you could easily skip this step. But if your skin is tight and feeling thirsty then it is time to choose a moisturizer. We always recommend a product that is oil-free and non-comedogenic (this means it won’t clog your pores). Try out different weight moisturizers to identify what feels right for you. You should feel hydrated but not have a sticky film of unabsorbed product layering your skin.
Protect. Every face (not to mention every decolletage and set of hands) deserves a healthy, daily dose of sunscreen every morning. If we had to recommend only one product for our patients to add into their daily routine, it would be a sunscreen with broad-spectrum UVA and UVB protection. Sunscreen serves to prevent skin cancer and to reduce the visible signs of dermatological wear and tear a.k.a. aging.
Repeat. Perform these steps twice a day (omitting sunscreen in the PM) to reveal healthy glowing skin. We recommend that you perform your regimen when you wake up in the morning before your face faces the day and once again before going to bed.
Don’t let the massive selection of drugstore and online products overwhelm you! Head over to our store to check out our curated collection of clinical skin care items today, or even better, call us to set up a complimentary consultation with one of our aestheticians so she can help you personalize a skin care regimen that will help you maintain skin that glows.
We have hand-selected products over the years and tested them internally to ensure that they are worth what’s in the bottle. You will find well-known brands like Elta, CLn, and Nutrafol in our store, but you will also see that we have made an in-house line of cosmeceuticals available to help fill in the gaps when commercially available products fell short of our expectations.
We see tons of patients with young skin at Bryn Mawr Dermatology, and if our main focus isn’t on battling acne breakouts, then it is protecting that skin from future abuse. If you have exhausted clinical skin care options and are still experiencing clogged pores, white heads or cystic breakouts, then we recommend booking an appointment with one of our medical professions to assess your situation and provide prescription care in addition to your current regimen. Uncontrolled breakouts can lead to permanent scarring if left untreated.
The undeniable winner in the sunscreen department for our younger patient population is the Elta Clear. This product comes in a tintend and tinted version, is SPF 46, is designed for acne-prone skin and includes an ingredient called Niacinamide that combats redness.
In our opinion, it is never too soon to start using a retinoid. This class of molecules is one of the most studied and proven anti-aging products on the market. You will find a variety of over the counter, watered-down versions available in drug stores and online. The chemical works by increasing skin-cell turnover and helps to accelerate the creation of collagen and elastin in the skin. You can enjoy the benefits of a prescription strength Retin-A by using BMD’s Skin Renewal Cream.

Let’s not forget sunscreen! As well as protecting against harmful UVA/UVB rays that cause skin cancer, sunscreens are the most tested and proven anti-aging product on the market. You can feel confident that the Elta Daily (which comes with or without a tint) will serve you well. It is sheer, but stands alone as a moisturizer + sunscreen and it’s micronized zinc formula won’t leave a hazy film on your skin.
Your 40s are a time for action! There are so many products available that have active ingredients all claiming to be the miracle anti-aging cure. The truth is, there is no one product that does it all, and there is no one skin care regimen that is perfect for everyone. Here we have listed only one of the many options for a comprehensive skincare regimen to help combat the signs of aging. If you would like a complimentary consultation with one of our licensed estheticians to review a personalized skincare regimen, shoot us a call at 610.525.7800.
BMD’s Soothing Foamy Cleanser is a great option for most skin types. As the name suggests, the product comes in a pump dispenser that whips the cleanser into a light foam that spreads easily. It is specially formulated to remove daily dirt and environmental toxins from your skin along with any makeup you might use. Although it was originally designed for ultra-sensitive, rosacea-prone, skin, we’ve found that it is appropriate for anyone that struggles with patchy dryness, a tendency for flushing/pinkness or T-zone oiliness.
This is the opportunity to really take your skin care regimen up a notch. We recommend supplementing your fight against UV exposure with a product called Heliocare. This oral supplement helps support skin health and maintain the skin’s ability to protect against the aging effects of free radicals. It is gluten-free and vegan, and clinically proven to help the visual signs of aging due to sun exposure.
Are you ready for a triple-action sunscreen? Elta Elements is composed of 100% physical UVA/UVB blockers, with just enough universal tint to provide light coverage, all whipped up in a moisturizing base. It is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types and is free of chemical additives making it reef-safe. Elta Elements layers well over a moisturizer if your skin is extra thirsty, and under makeup it behaves like a smooth and silky primer. Finally, ultra-hydrating hyaluronic acid works to protect and hydrate skin.
You may already be supplementing your care with treatments like Botox to smooth wrinkles or microneedling to improve skin tone and texture, but by now, you know that a regular skin care regimen is essential for maintaining healthy skin. We carry a plethora of products that have some serious active ingredients to help you achieve your goals. It goes without saying that we recommend you stay true to using sunscreen every day, and the general concept of cleanse, treat, moisturize and protect is basically the same, but instead of “treating” once a day we recommend adding in a second (or third) product to synergistically achieve your goals.
SENTE Bio Complete Serum is a lightweight nighttime formula that combines the benefits of patented HSA (Heparan Sulfate Analog) technology with sustained release retinoids and other key ingredients for the appearance of firmer and smoother skin with minimal irritation. We recommend it for all skin types with signs of solar and environmental damage.
