The procedure is recommended to consistently remove all of the dangerous cells while sparing healthy tissue and leave the smallest possible scar. Mohs surgery is the most effective treatment to remove BCCs and SCCs in cosmetically and functionally important areas like the on the face, fingers, toes and genitals. Skin cancers that are recurrent, rapidly growing, particularly large or have indistinct edges are also good candidates for Mohs micrographic surgery.

If you have been diagnosed with skin cancer or an atypical mole, the most likely suggestion for removal will be a minor, in-office procedure that eliminates the questionable cells. Two options are available depending on your exact diagnosis, and will be recommended to you by your diagnosing physician. The first option is called an Electrodessication and Curettage, or ED&C for short. During this procedure you will be injected with local anesthesia, followed by a superficial destruction and removal of malignant cells with sterilized surgical tools. The second option, for growths requiring a deeper level of attention, involves local anesthesia followed by precise removal of the lesion with a scalpel, and results in two layers of sutures. Non-cancerous growths can als be removed via excision if determined medically necessary by your provider.

There are a variety of growths that commonly occur just under or within the skin that are created by the abnormal accumulation of bodily substances in a discrete area. Sometimes these growths are stable for years and do not require attention, but occasionally they can start to enlarge or become infected. In those scenarios your provider will let you know if it is appropriate to relieve the pressure by a simple procedure called an Incision and Drainage, also known as an I&D. If your provider deems this a necessary step, she will clean the area and proceed to breach the skin with a sterile tool and extract the accumulated substance with manual force.

Getting a splinter in your finger is usually no cause for concern, but in certain scenarios a foregin body (any hard object that does not belong) embedded in your skin can be more troublesome. If you have a sliver of glass, metal or anything else stuck below the skin’s surface call to make an appointment to have it sterilely removed and avoid any ensuing infection that may occur.
